Condo / HDB exercise

Post by SunWuKong » Tue, 23 Feb 2010 4:04 pm

How many calories required to walk up the stairs of your condo/HDB?

Was supposed to be working, got this stuck in my head and then calculated it out. Got the answer and then found nobody who gave a shit anywhere near.

So here I am. I love the internet.

Your average HDB has about 14 floors minimum. Floor separation is 3.1m+. Therefore the vertical distance from the first floor (Ground floor if you are used to living in a civilized country) and the floor of the 14th is 13*3.1≈40m+.

Using g≈9.81 and mass=75kg then the energy required to get to top is GPE≈29650 J.

Since one Calorie (kcal) is approximately 4184 J the calories burnt by this feat are: 7.087.

However, because the food to energy efficiency of the human body doesn't get much better than approximately 26% the Calories that would need to be eaten would be ≈ 27 kcal

Rinse and repeat for the required Calorie burn. You burn around half as many calories for the descent and it is harder on the knees. So perhaps you can just take the elevator down.

Can you sort how many calories are burned per step in a set of stairs? I don't think vertical distance is accurate because energy burned per step depends on how high each step is.

I tried it on our HDB; 28 floors => 448 steps. Took me 15 minutes last Sunday, took me 12 yesterday.

:D

I've assumed a regulation step height of 16cm and your weight at 75kg.

0.116 Calories (kcal) per step

If you complete the climb in 12 minute then it is 0.07 kcal/s

A single trip takes ≈ 50 kcal.
