A good divorce lawyer and other advice needed

Post by chikadilly » Wed, 17 Feb 2010 1:01 pm

I am a Singapore PR married to a citizen. We have two kids, 1 and 3. I believe a divorce will be down the road in the near future, because we do not get along well anymore, and I find my husband's behavior increasingly unreasonable.

I am somewhat familiar with Singapore's divorce laws. My questions are as follows - maybe you can answer based on your experience:
1) Who would more likely get custody of the kids? He is a citizen, and I am not, so does that mean he has an advantage in this case? Also, does that depend on income? We both work, but he earns slightly more than I do. He also has his family's support - I bet his parents would transfer their flat and other assets to him to help his case if needed. Does that count?
2) Would it help my case if I acquired Singapore citizenship?
3) Any other advice on what I can do to improve my odds at court?
4) Can you recommend a good and experienced divorce lawyer? Even if we are not divorcing now, I can use some advice, I guess!

Thanks!

Sure, I read that. Seems like a different situation and different concerns.

My recommendation is exactly the same for both. Go see a lawyer. Anything less is just hearsay.

Last I checked, Harry Elias does mostly commercial law. But if you want to pay $500/hour...

I will look him up...

As for the fees, actually I have no idea what lawyer fees are like in Singapore. Is $500/hour quite usual, or is it towards the higher end?

It's a company. http://www.harryelias.com.sg/

Definitely toward the higher end. Gotta pay those Raffles Place rents somehow

(Disclaimer: I've actually used them for a bit of commercial work. Service and quality of work was fine, and the final price came under their own estimate, but it did feel a bit like using a sledgehammer to crack a peanut.)

For a more affordable option, check out eg. HOH, which seems to have an outlet in every suburban shopping mall. http://www.hoh.com.sg/
