Thinking of moving to Singapore - advice please :)
Thinking of moving to Singapore - advice please :)
Hello everyone,
I'm a journalist and I'm currently living in Dubai, having relocated here from the UK back in 2007. A combination of itchy feet and lack of job opportunities in the city following the recession have made me decide to look elsewhere and one of the places I'm seriously considering is Singapore. I have some initial questions that I'd really appreciate some answers for
1. I'm a journalist, features writer to be exact, with experience in magazines and newspapers. What are the main english publications in Singapore and are there opportunities for people with my type of experience?
2. Cost of living - what salary would I need to be on to enjoy a comfortable standard of living and be able to save some at the end of each month?
3. How do you find Singapore? What made you decide to move there? Overall do you enjoy your life there? What are the main positive and negative points I need to consider?
4. What is the job market like there? Have you guys felt the effects of the recession (lay offs, stale job market etc?).
5. I'm a single girl with no real obligations apart from my credit card debt - do you think I'd like Singapore?
5. Please put me in the right direction with regards to job websites and general Singapore expat websites.
6. What can you tell me about the Singapore publishing industry?
Thank you so, so much in advance. I'm really looking forward to some responses!

I'm in a chipper mood so I'll answer.. lol
1. All of them are in English except for the Chinese, Malay and Hindi ones.
2. Average meal £20 unless you eat hawker food which is about £40
3. Positives - not many english people here
Negatives - too many Chinese here
4. If you're single that's great. I'm looking to chop my current squeeze in. Send me a pic and I'll see if you're up to scratch. if not I doubt they'll let you in the country. This is a place for beautiful people
5. Job websites... erm.... no lah... we live of the Government lah. No can do.
6. No publishing industry here. All done everywhere else. We just import.
I hope that helps. If not then suggest you use that thing called a brain. Have you ever heard of Google? They're quite big in helping people search. Another might be Bing or even yahoo. Oh hang on there's a search field on this site. Maybe that'll help. I mean this is an EXPAT website.
And people wonder why Journalism has gone down the pan! Go figure!

Don't p*ss me off! I am running out of places to hide the bodies.

Hmmm...
There seem to be a lot of people on this forum who think they're really funny, when in fact they're really not.
Yes, I know how to use google. Thanks for the patronising tip. I just thought I'd ask for some information from people who are already living in the country. My bad - I thought that was the point of this website.
What a bunch of miserable, unfriendly people! I'll leave you all to stew in your bitterness

With all due respect I think you've been exceptionally lazy.
Us 'miserable and unfriendly people' have all managed to find out these very very basic items by googling or searching this forum.
Considering you say you're a journalist you should know what research is. You have done none and therefore got the resonses accordingly.
We are an exceptionally friendly group here. You just got your just desserts.

Hi there
Wow, I too am a journalist in Dubai and would love to move to Sin!
I know there was one woman who went there from one of the leading magazines here, and she was an editor who managed to find a great job. Sadly, I don't know who she went to though, but this means there must be fantastic jobs out there.
We have just returned from Singapore and I would say it would be a great place to move to having come from Dubai. It has all the best bits of Dubai, like the shops, but lots of culture too. I used to travel there when I was single and loved it, so I'm sure it would be a nice place to live as a single female.
Good luck, I hope you find something.
