Where to buy boxed wine

Post by Texpat » Sat, 30 Jan 2010 8:39 pm

Has anyone seen boxed wine for sale in Singapore (not the cheap Franzia stuff, but more along the lines of Black Box wine)? If not, are there any recommendations on an inexpensive place to buy good table wine?

It's available in your favorite large supermarket (Carrefour etc). The problem is that Singapore's alcohol tax is by percent ABV, so it's virtually the same price as simply buying wine by the bottle, if not more expensive due to limited demand and limited selection.

Unless you're buying in bulk (case or more), the cheapest wine is usually found at promotional sales at those same supermarkets, and as you'd expect from the French, Carrefour is usually pretty good.

Lindemans Cawarra @ $15.95 a bottle at Carrefour. Hard to beat stuff like this.

Having said that the best deals I have seen have been at Fairprice, the Fairprice Extra store at AMK had a few 1-for-1 offers the last time I was there. Turned me into a human camel on the way back... :)

Carlo Rossi California Red, 1.5l, @$19 at CS. Occasionally only. And this is one the biggest mystery so perhaps someone willing to explain: this particular brand and package is sold for the prices varying between the said 19 and 39 (27, 29, 34) all at CS. Different days, different outlets no synchro.
Talking about cheapo-wine, "Everyday Red/White" brand :) appears regularly at Esso stations @$25 er two regular bottles. Quite drinkable

Isn't Carlo Rossi the king of el cheapo wines? :) $19 for that is very expensive considering you can get much better wines at below the $20 threshold.

I've seen 1-for-1 deals at Fairprice for a Chilean wine that costs $25, and it was a good one too (Caliterra or Frontera), not some no-name junk.

Oh shucks, just noticed that was for a 1.5L bottle. Now that definitely sounds better! :)

This is a high-end of the cheapo wines! C'mon, everything below $30 is a cheapo wine in SG and within this price range I rather score by my subjective taste than the brand and CR scores here reasonably high :P

Some good wine deals available, even picked up several bottles earlier today:

Carrefour: Lindemans at $45 for 3 , Penfold's Rawson's Retreat at $19.95 (normally $32 I think).

Fairprice: Vino Maipo Reserva at $32... 1-for-1. I pretty much cleared out the Killiney Road stock so you'd be better off checking elsewhere. :)

I figured by boxed wine you meant 1.5-2 litres in a bag inside a box with a nozzle for pouring rather than 6 single bottles in a box - is that right?

If that's what you're after, the only place I've ever seen it is in Fairprice Finest and it was red which I don't drink so I didn't take much notice of what kind it was but it was around $36-38 and was in bag form rather than a box (1.5 litres I think).
