Hi
Are there any prohibitions on single men from hiring maids that any one knows about? I read a really old post on another site and it seemed to suggest that this was the case.
Greatly appreciate your reply. Just in the process of choosing where to relocate to in Asia and I've got a thousand questions!
Regards
Alan

You can't hire a live-in maid if you're single, but hourly cleaning services etc are not a problem.

Thanks for the really speedy reply. Based on your experience, I don't suppose two blokes sharing would make it ok? Bit of a deal breaker for me as I have a dog who will need the attention of a live in maid when I'm out. Sadly will have to rule singapore out if this is the case.

If a single male cannot have a maid . . . guess what two men living together would get as an answer . . .

Thanks for the responses
I've enquired directly with a couple of maid agencies all of whom say its not a problem. I guess they have an incentive to say that
Shame, takes Singapore off my destination list.

Can you imagine the new maid agencies that would be located in OT!

Orchard Towers. Local Shopping mall with lots of entertainment venues (bars/pubs) that are filled with foreign ladies of the evening who will take care of your chores by the hours, usually after midnight for a couple of hundred (though with the recession it might have come back down a bit. OT is affectionately referred to as the Four Floors of Whores!
Think about it. These gals come from the same towns & provinces as the foreign maids. There is absolutely no difference between them except one gets $300/night for 15 minutes work (or less) while the other gets $300/month for working 18 hours/day 29 days a month. But, the maids have also been known to take care of the master as well. Could be an interesting business arrangement wouldn't you say? And the MOM knows this.
And that's why you'll not get a live in maid (foreign one that is) You could get a local one "Maybe" but it's doubtful and it will cost you a bomb as their rates are probably way out in left field if they charge $10/hour - and get to go home at night.

Hell, MOM would probably let them have a maid, at least the maid wouldn't have to worry I wouldn't think.
But, somehow, I still don't think that would fly either...

SMS, I will have to disagree. MOM will allow live in domestic helper based on stringent scrutiny and checks and balances. A buddy of mine went through the process and now has a live in helper. In fact, I am working with MOM to get my family domestic helper to come here from India to manage my diet and food intake. The challenge is the paperwork but otherwise I have not faced any restrictions.

I'm no expert SMS but I think your OT pricing is a little steep. Next time wear your "second" best pair of cuff links. You'll have more left over for retirement.

Use an agency. I am single and brought my maid from HK to Singapore because I have two dogs and travel weekly for work.
