Affordable Shopping in Singapore?

Post by kachofool » Sat, 16 Jan 2010 11:22 am

Hey all,

I've been shopping around for some simple things (t-shirts, dress shirt, etc) but am generally surprised at the prices for most of these things. I've been to Orchard Road, Vivo City and the Mustafa Centre... Having trouble finding a brand name t-shirt for < $60!

Are these the general price points? Am I just blind?

I was super happy with the incredibly cheap food available here, but disappointed with the fairly expensive apparel. Any recommendations?

Regards,

KF

I'm surprised you found any T-shirts above $10 in Mustafa :o

Sure seems like it. If you want branded clothing, it's going to cost you more or less the same no matter where in the world you buy it... but off-brand stuff in Singapore is ridiculously cheap, and you can get tailored shirts for well under $60 a pop.

Hey,

Thanks for the reply. I was a little surprised in the sense that printed t-shirts (brand names like Nike, Adidas, etc, not talking designer stuff here) are ~$60 sgd. In the west, they are most definitely not even close to this price point. Most are ~20, and on sale closer to $10-15. I know that there's no tax and the value of the sgd is a bit less than the $US or $CAD but I still thought the difference was fairly significant.

I did notice that the off-brand shirts were quite cheap. Maybe I can redirect the topic to something a little more useful. Are there any unique Singaporean clothing brands / venues here? I'm not an expat btw, but an exchange student (so apologies if I'm getting touristy). It'd be sweet to get a t-shirt that I couldn't get back in the west that looked pretty fly to boot (no I <3 Singapore shirts!).

Regards,

KF

Pure Milk/PMK is probably the best-known local T-shirt designer:

Localbrand's got some good ideas but (IMO) mostly pretty bad execution:

To find others, go poke around eg. the top floors of Heeren, Far East Plaza, or wherever it is that young 'poreans hang out these days.

Also, while Uniqlo and Muji are Japanese and not Singaporean, they're got some pretty cool cut-price shirts you won't see in the West.

when singaporean went to USA. they hunt for the banded goods like Nike, Adidas, Guess, Levi, Coach, forever21, Nine West, Timberland, OshKosh B'gosh , etc

Why?
B'coz it is so much cheaper in USA.

add on

men lab series.
ladies cosmetic

Base on what i understand

Lab series (big bottle) in US is cheaper than the small bottle in Singapore.

Ben & Jerry 1 tubs in singapore, can buy 2 to 3 tubs in USA

basically any USA brand in Singapore is expensive than US.

Agree. Shopping in USA is so cheap! Sometimes, its cheaper to buy online and pay the international shipping to Singapore, than buying the same item in Singapore.

And if you are at one of the outlet malls, the prices are even more

You can try some of the local boutique in Haji lane, Arab area.
Also some cool stuff at the Cathay, bottom end of Orchard.

All else fails, make a trip to Malaysia. Great cheap shopping there.

shopping in Singapore

Hi kachofool

do try some these shops below

Adidas Factory Outlet store at Novena Square (above Novena MRT station)on Level 2.

Nike factory outlet at West Coast plaza (previously Ginza plaza)

There is a shop in Holland Village, along the Delifrance/Swensens stretch that sells outlet cast out.

I guess you need to keep being on the lookout for such shops.

Have fun shopping
