Moving from the UK - What to bring with me?

Post by Rich_UKExpat » Fri, 08 Jan 2010 8:46 pm

I move to Singapore in 8 weeks time. My employer are providing me with a 20ft container (max) to ship/fly my belongings over. I do not intend to bring any furniture (leaving that in my house to rent out). Can anyone recommend items to bring with me, useful things that I might need as such?

So far I'm taking these:-

- Cycle
- Hifi/Stereo
- Clothes (shorts, t-shirts, flip flops! etc)

But what else?

I will be in a hotel for the first 4 weeks (provided by work) and then plan to get a room in a flat share (furnished) somewhere.

Also, any Top Ten items/products to bring from the UK what I might find good to have, that is not cheap or easy obtainable in Singa?

Thanks in advance :)

Get a load of Buttkickers not available in Singapore, if you get the VAT back on them you can flog them at the VAT price. Stick them on the av forum classified will sell like hotcakes. I will buy one for a start.

Also get a Sony 5400 AV amp top 5 star amp and not available here neither is Crest tooth paste.

Do they have shorts and T-shirts in the UK   I couldn't find any christmas pudding this year!

Do not waste that 20ft container fill it up with goodies, you can dispose of here, that's being enterprising 5 posts and you can send a private message! I'll think of something in the meantime

Missing items or difficult items to get in Singapore:
1. Frazzle crisps
2. Monster Munch
3. Prawn Cocktail Skips
4. King of Shaves or in fact any decent shaving Gel. The like their foam here!
5. Ibuprofen - only available from the pharmacy and one packet at a time!
6. I'm sure there's plenty more....
Don't p*ss me off! I am running out of places to hide the bodies.

Bringing some UK food stuff is good. But dont get carried away like I did.

I bought over like 2k tea bags, ketchup and brown sauce, cereal, beans, chocolate, biscuits etc etc.

But then I was eating out a lot and now over a year, a lot of this stuff is out of date and still sitting in my cupboard.

Having said that, I still not learnt my lesson and still stockpile whenever I head home.

Query...

Hi there! Am relocating to Singapore shortly and my husband's company also provides for a 20 ft container to carry our stuff in. However, we've been strictly advised against putting any foodstuff in the cargo. Also, my Relocation counsellor tells me there is a "fumigation" process that each shipment goes through where they use some bromide stuff, post which the stuff would anyway not be edible. Can someone confirm this? We arent carrying any furniture and it really seems a waste! I'd really like to carry some local flavoured teas and the like...
For those who fight for it, life has a flavor the sheltered will never know.
