Keeping both Australian and Singaporean (dual) citizenship

Post by orangepi » Thu, 07 Jan 2010 11:10 pm

Hi,

I am currently a holder of both Australian and Singaporean citizenship. I was born and bred in Australia. I am an Australian citizen by 'birth' and a Singaporean citizen by 'decent' meaning that my parents were Singaporean citizens at the time of my birth.

I have to renounce my citizenship this year when I turn 22. Is there a way I will be able to remain a dual citizen? I am reluctant to give up my Singaporean citizenship as I plan to work in Singapore after I complete my university studies. I am aware that Singapore allows dual citizenship under certain circumstances. Does anyone know what these circumstances are? Will educational background be one?

How else can I retain dual citizenship? I am willing to hear any 'under the table' ways of keeping both.

Cheers

Absolutely no chance of dual citizenship, even if you kept your Singapore passport you'd more than likely get arrested the next time you arrive in Singapore for not doing NS. I'm assuming you haven't done NS and wont want to?!

Singapore government don't allow dual citizenship.

When time for NS and didn't return before the date line.
Even you had renounced Singaporean citizenship.
Once you step in Singapore custom. Charge.

Does anyone know if I will be able to qualify for PR instead then?
I don't have to worry about NS...I am female.

No.

Once you give up your singapore citizenship, no way the government will issue a PR to you.

Someone mention even EP also will be an issue.

ah...being female changes the game completely.

As you know by now, Singers won't let you hold another citizenship aside from theirs. You'll have to choose one--people can tell you which one to choose all day long but ultimately, it will depend on you, what your priorities are and what you finally want in life. Once you've decided which one to choose, then we could narrow down the universe of possibilities people may tell you.
