Hi,
Recently I was being shown a HDB for rent. The agent showing me the flat told me that I'd have to pay half month rent for his commission, which I know is normal.
But then he told me each time I renewed my lease I'd have to pay him a further half month rent.
Is this normal, or was he trying to rip me off. I'd never heard of this happenning before.

Yes it is.
You can renew the agreement with the landlord directly by skipping the agent, provided your landlord is genuine person.
I have been doing this for the last 2 years.

Yes it is normal practice in singapore.
I've been living in a HDB in bishan for 2 year and every time you renew the contract you must pay the agent fee as well.
If you want to save money you can negotiate directly with the owner.
