NS for 1st generation PR's

Post by patrickbrooks88 » Sun, 27 Dec 2009 3:24 am

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could be any help in regard to performing NS as a first generation PR.

I want apply to become a resident. In the mean time I want to asked some "if" questions just to be safe etc. I don't really care if I am like drafted or anything, but want to know if I would be drafted in any case under certian conditions. I'm a US citizen 21 years old, single, currently work with Dyncorps in the Middle East in Qatar and want to live in Singapore permanetly. I would like to rent a apartment in Singapore for $2,500.00 Singapore dollers a month , and at the same time want to be able to work overseas with my company that is stationed in Qatar and still with live in Singapore at the same time and call it my new home.

Anyway, I don't know if I can apply under any special schemes I don't think I count, I don't have a spouse, or have a sponsor, or a skill execpt security etc. I don't know if I could apply to the workers scheme or anything. I just simply wish to make my residents in Singapore. Simple as that may be to ask, it's not been that simple.lol

My question is: If I'm a first generation resident, and I didn't apply under any schemes, any workers pass, etc. Just as a person who immigrated to Singapore and was granted PR status: Would I have to perform military service?

I also have a question that is off topic:

Can a person immigrate to Singapore just to live there without having a to be employed in Singapre, without being a student, or without having to apply under the workers scheme or any other special schemes?

I've asked proper authrioites and not gotten an answer, assuming there very busy or don't have a exact answer, and I will call there offices anyway next month to ask my 2nd question just find out if am at liberty to apply with any special circamstances etc. I'm not going to ask them my NS question that is something elese my if question.

Your help would be most appreciated. I hope for a streight answer for better or worse. As long as it's fact and is the truth.

Won't happen. If it did, half the oil field hands in Asia would be living here (I know - I was one of them for many years). You have to have a job in Singapore. As long as you work offshore they will not entertain it. To gain residency here you must work here (and even then, it's not a guarantee that they would give you PR).

Anyway, I don't know if I can apply under any special schemes I don't think I count, I don't have a spouse, or have a sponsor, or a skill execpt security etc. I don't know if I could apply to the workers scheme or anything. Marrying a Local is NOT a way to get PR. You have to sign a letter before you can get married that acknowledges that you understand the marrying a local will not be a guarantee for admission as a PR here.

My question is: If I'm a first generation resident, and I didn't apply under any schemes, any workers pass, etc. Just as a person who immigrated to Singapore and was granted PR status: Would I have to perform military service?

As a hypothetical question, if you were to be given PR for some reason and it was not under the skilled & professional scheme, yes you would have to do NS (if you are under 25 - although your liability is up to 40)

I also have a question that is off topic:

Can a person immigrate to Singapore just to live there without having a to be employed in Singapre, without being a student, or without having to apply under the workers scheme or any other special schemes?

NO. Unless you have heaps of money to invest here.

Just don't get you hopes up as you are only looking for disappointment. Forewarned is forearmed. It's not easy getting here even if you have the qualifications. Why would they let people in here who are not contributing anything to the growth of Singapore? Land and space are at a premium, and having non-productive bodies taking up housing space that could be used to house those who would contribute to the building up of the GDP here is definitely the most important thing for the country's well-being.

It's the "Son of the 1st Generation" that has to do NS then.... i get confused with the wording but all i knew was, OP technically doesn't.

Scooby,

If the 1st Gen is given PR for other than the skilled or professional scheme, e.g., family ties, and he is under 25 or 26 years old, he will still have to do NS. It's only 1st Gen's under the skilled/professional scheme that are exempt from NS (wouldn't make sense to give them PR for their skills and then throw them into NS) :o

Good example of this is an acquaintance of mine. He is a Singapore Citizen but worked in the UK for 20+ years. Returned to Singers about 15 years ago. Son born in the UK, (wife in Non-Singaporean) so son has foreign citizenship, He's been in Singapore on a Students visa for years, but at the moment he's back in the UK at Cambridge. If he returns here, he could theoretically get PR based on family ties. He would be 1st Gen and he would be required to do NS. But if he gets his degree and gets a position here and applies based on the skilled/professional scheme he's exempted.

But at 21 now, PR is unlikely prior to 25.

Not using the family ties option. Father's a citizen, mother's a PR. Would be rather easy actually. Instant cannon fodder.

Oh, had to come back and edit....

If you were talking about the OP, The odds are highly improbable (I would actually like to say impossible - I'm pretty sure it is) that the government would even consider it with out anything for the OP to offer Singapore at all, no investments, no local Job, no family ties and a skill set that is easily filled by old retired cops & alcoholics - security guards? (I'm sure he's talking more about "blackwater" type of security though)
