Gum & Average lunches

Post by ilovemexmany » Sun, 13 Dec 2009 7:32 pm

2 questions:

1. Just wondering what people tend to pay on average for lunches in Singapore. It's just before coming here, people tend to tell me most cost SGD2-3/meal. But I am not really finding these prices lately. Tend to spend SGD6-7/meal.

2. What is the status on chewing gum in SG these days? Been doing some research, but have not found the answer.

You can spend $3~5 or you can spend $30~50, it's up to you and your wallet/purse. You can eat in Hawker Centre's - $3~5, or fast food places - $7~$12, or restaurants where only your wallet will govern you - Starting @ around $15 up.

Chewing gum (Dental Gum) can be purchased from the pharmacy. You have to sign for it in order to buy it. Normal chewing guy you can bring in with you but you cannot sell it. You can use it for your personal consumption but don't try bringing in a case/carton of the stuff. Several packs is okay. Any more than that and they might consider in importing which is against the law.

It also depends on which food court or hawker center you go to. Naturally those in the city would come closer to $10 or even more. You can find decent meals in the suburbs for $5 or less but you definitely need some trial&error / recommendation on which store is good.

Out of the city center you can easily get chicken-rice for $2.50 SGD w/o drink. That's around $1.75 USD. A drink will cost another $1. Indonesian stalls (the ones with lots of plates of food and you select what you want) are around the same price.

As for the chewing gum question - I suspect importing any amount is illegal but they just don't bother with small amounts. There is a myth that bring it in for personal consumption is okay but it is only that - a myth.
