Expat to Singapore - Schools for Aspergers (mild) Children

Post by ogmom » Wed, 09 Dec 2009 11:29 am

We are moving to Singapore in the Spring. Our children are 3 and 5 - our 5 yr old son has Aspergers, mild - yet want to be sure we place him in the best situation for education. Any suggestions? Any experiences we may learn from?
Many thanks in advance.

There are definitely kids with mild Asberger's at the American School, but I don't know how well their special needs are being met across divisions. Dover Court might be an option, but I know there is a long waiting list . I would call Bill Hanagan at SAS and ask him some very specific questions regarding your son as a starting point. If you can arrive in Singapore with a detailed IEP, you'll be in good shape. Good luck :)

Tanglin Trust school has just started a program for children with special needs this fall - you may want to give them a call.

Check out www.iapsg.com and www.ssnap.info and contact the parents there for more advice on schools - join their mailing lists for updates on programs and schools. You may not find the kind of educational support you would find in the US, as the situation for SN kids tends to change according to how full the International Schools are. The fuller they are, the less they are interested in enrolling kids who need a bit of extra support. There are lots of international families here already with children with mild AS who will be happy to help you. Mods, these are voluntary support groups run for and by parents of SN kids.
