New to Singapore...need a SIM card with data

Post by londontosingapore » Fri, 04 Dec 2009 3:03 pm

Hello all,

We just got to Singapore and I'm looking for the best way to get a Singapore SIM card...with data (ideally 3G or EDGE) so I can check email etc while on the move.

Since we're new to the country, I would have thought that pay-as-you-go is probably easier to set-up than contract....

...can anyone recommend a network provider that sells pay-as-you-go SIMs with data?

A friend mentioned M1 but I've not been able to confirm this from their website.

Many thanks in advance,

M.

I use a Singtel pay-as-you-go card. For some reason, however, data only uses GPRS, no edge, no 3G. (Calls sometimes use 3G though).

You can put Singtel IDEAS prepaid in your favorite search engine for more information.

M1 Prepaid Broadband is probably what your friend is talking about. You can use the normal Prepaid Top-up cards to add credit to the service. The basic one is $18 for three days.

Check it out below.

I signed up with Starhub about a month a go.

I get 100 mins (per sec billing)
500 SMS
1 GB traffic

$30 a month. It's a month to month contract which was perfect as I already had my phone O2 Germany. So you don't get a subsidized phone but if you're moving here with one it's great. Ask them about it, couldn't see it on their promotions but yeah it should still be there.

Thanks everyone. I went round to the Singtel, M1 and Starhub retail shops and over the weekend and this is what they told me:

* Singtel -- they don't offer data on a pay as you go...and you can't get a monthly contract on a long term visit pass....

* M1 -- they don't advertise it well but you get data for 1cent/kB (~$10/MB) on the M1 pre-paid/pay-as-you-go SIM card. They will also offer a monthly contract if you leave a security deposit of $200

* Starhub -- they also don't advertise it well but you can get data for 1cent/kB....it's not clear if you can get a monthly contract on a long term visit pass but I will certainly look into the $30/month contract that Deetz mentioned.

Many thanks and hope this helps other folk,

M.
