Party etiquette when you don't know the host

Invited to a housewarming party as part of a larger group from work.
Invitation was by email and played down formality. I don't know the host except by sight.

Q: Am I expected to bring a gift or would it be good form to do so?
If so, what sort of thing would be appropriate?

You should always bring a gift when invited to someone's home, whether it is expected or not. It doesn't need to be extravagant: a small potted plant, a lovely candle, nice soaps, etc. Especially since it's work realted, you want to do the right thing.

It's hard to go wrong with a decent bottle of wine.. even if they don't drink, they can keep it & give it to someone else.. Beware of any with religious prohibitions however..

You must not turn up empty handed or early. Bring a bottle of wine, decent chocolates (no cadbury or van houtens!), flowers for the lady of the home.

Wear nice socks incase you have to remove your shoes at the door - since it is a house warming!
