Q about background check. THX!

Post by linda_liu » Thu, 05 Nov 2009 6:48 pm

Please help below questions or share your experience on background screening/check. Many thanks!

1. Is there anything employer cannot screen in a pre-employment background check?
2. What are the local laws and customs related to pre-employment background screening?
3. Any local vendors can provide background screening services?
4. Any concerns or questions I should be aware of?

Thanks again!! :)

It depends on the employer. Sometimes bigger companies have their own department, sometimes they outsource it and the procedures are different from employer to employer.

For you it shouldn't make any difference though. Just submit your documentation and contacts as requested and don't lie, then everything should work out well.

Do you have something to hide? Criminal conviction? Caught for smoking pot (that's not criminal IMHO)? Bankruptcy? Wife beater? Nothing to hide, who cares? Something to hide... minor... probably nobody cares... major... the gahmen can call on a lot of resources.

I have recently carried out background checks for my employees with the help of a local law firm. They did an EIS search (Enhanced Individual Search) and said that unless we hire a private investigator with good contacts (ex police force or the like) that would be all we can do as the government doesn't give out information concerning criminal records. According to the law companies / employers can only check if you have any civil proceedings against you like litigation, bankruptcy etc.

I hope this helps!

these days, a check on their social network profile probably revert a lot more than they want you to know!

Agree with durain!

Linda_liu, most companies check health backgrounds (AIDS & TB), academic qualification authenticity, work references, and criminal records. Some also asks on bankruptcy. (Although as an observation, it seems bankruptcy isn't such a huge deal in some since one could be declared a bankrupt if s/he is unable to pay his debts of at least $10,000. That's not a big sum.)

For the most part, background check is just a formality if there's nothing criminal to 'hide'.
