Driving holiday to Malaysia

Anyone got some good recommendations of a coastal location in Malaysia that's an easy drive (3-4hr) from Singapore? We'd like to head away for a couple of days with a 3yo and a baby, so not travel too far, by car, to a spot that's on the water (nice beach please!) and has a few things to do like water sports, choice of food places etc.

Any suggestions?

The biggest within that distance is either Malaka or Port Dickson. PD is further but has the nicer beach.

There is another option of Tiomen Island but that means taking a ferry boat from Mersing and leaving the car behind. Going at this time of year is not a good idea either as the water is not so good, hence most of the places to stay are now closed through the winter.
