Hi there. I'm looking to buy a model train set for my 8 year old son for Christmas. I was trying to find Hornby but no luck. Anybody know a store I can look at???

I think I saw some sets in ToysRUs in Paragon but that was a five years ago or so.

Okay will check it out but I doubt they have those ones that the older men use for hobbies. Yet it's worth a try looking. Thanks

Oh, do I just go to the Hornby Website and order it from there even though they are in UK? Can you suggest a good one for 8 year old boys?

I've got a 027 gauge Lionel that dates from 1948 and is still in 95% condition with original boxes. Was used only 2 weeks per year (Xmas) for around 14 years only. Been stored since around 1961 or 62. But I don't think that is quite what you are looking for. There used to be one in the basement of one of the shopping centres here but for the life of me I cannot remember the name of it.

I don't know if it's still there or not but there was a shop in the basement of the Adelphi on Coleman street a couple of years ago.

Excellent, thanks for letting me know. I will check out both stores. Sounds like you have a nice collection considering it's age and condition. Maybe this will turn into a long-term hobby for my son as well.

I've done a pretty extensive search on where to buy Model Trains in Singapore and have discovered a store called Hobby Bounties that sells Hornby Trains as well as lots of other toys for boys. They are at Katong Shopping Centre.

Toycraft Pte Ltd at Adelphi is still there but their train sets start at $699.00

The Orchard Store at Hotel Grand Central was also a great hobby store and they sell trains sets from Germany called Fleischmann - Rocco. They start at $320.00.

Anyway, I'm happy that I finally found the Hornby set for my son and thought I'd share the info. in case anyone else is ever looking for Model Trains.

Thank you everyone for sharing the links and info.
I am so glad I stumbled upon this thread.

Now, may I ask would there be any store selling within a lower range?
Say max S$200?

As a beginner and first-timer as well, I am looking for one which is more sturdy and decent than those sold in ToyRUs yet not that expensive to break the bank.

I would call all 3 stores to see what their lowest price range is and if they are willing to ship anything in that's cheaper. Since I was only looking for the big boy models I was not interested in that level. Hobby Bounties may have something to suit you and if not, they can order it from England since they are importing the other Hornby sets anyway. The owner loves anything British. The store is packed with all kinds of fun things for boys. If I remember, I think I did see a Thomas the Tank type train set.

Hobby Bounties - 6440 1890

See the thread for the other phone numbers.

Let us know what you find since I'm sure other people will be looking in the future as well.

Good luck.

Model Trains

Just another quick thought. Model Trains are very popular in Malaysia and I know they have some stores there. If you want to take a weekend away to KL then you may end up saving quite a bit. Not sure off-hand what the stores are called but I know they exist there. That was going to be my next stop.
