Helper with 'early childhood' qualifications - an oxymoron??

Post by mrshamilton » Wed, 28 Oct 2009 7:25 am

As I negotiate the path that is returning to work and relocating to singapore I'm wondering how others are coping.

I've spent the past 15 mnths one-on-one with my son, and now I will be back at work fulltime...in a new country. From my posts you'll see I've been investigating full day care, montessori/steiner, and other options.

I'm wondering if anyone has managed to find that most marvellous balance of a helper who is also an educator? In Australia we found an incredible nanny who could help out on an irregular basis, and she fit the bill...has anyone found someone like this, or is the Helper job description more of a cook/cleaner/childminder....???

Thanks for your opinions...

Many times on the CV of the helper they will list the education, certificates they have received. Our helper did some post high-school education in elementary childcare - but I'm not sure exactly what this entailed in the Philipines. I know a couple of people who have hired some of the teaching staff from the nursery/preschool their little ones attend to spend a couple afternoons a week with their children.

A domestic who has had children herself? Or doesn't OJT count? :P

Fair comment! As a stay-at-home mum I should be more sensitive!

Hello there!

I'm actually looking for a family which lives near town to 'governess'
(borrowing an old-fashion word due to the lack of a better one) for.

I'm currently holding a freelance job as writer, and have been tutoring
children from the age of 5 to 13, from Korea, Australia and local kids
for the past 5 years.

Also, I've previous experience for babysitting, been caring for my cousins
from young (from an infant till toddler age). having said, i lived in for 2 months
to help out in the household when the baby arrived.

I love kids, though I'm a tad too young to be a mom yet, still I nag and
behave like one. Perhaps, it's the DNA in the eldest in the family to care
for the younger siblings and all. *shrugs

But I've to confess- I'm not much of a cook. *sheepish.. :S
Simple pasta and hot meals I can handle, anything fancy would be a problem.
About cleaning up, I wouldn't mind cleaning after the kid, washing up..
but that's as far as it goes, I wouldn't be doing other housechores.

Other details, please PM me if you're interested.
(hopefully, you do live in central area)
