As it was a copy of the same file I didn't not attempt to check it as I've said, they all work fine on my office PC. It's when I open them up in my home pc that the problem arises.

The image files all open up in IE both in the office (IE8) and at home(IE8). What's interesting is that Excel calls it up in IE but double clicking the image file itself opens it up in Windoze Picture & Fax viewer.

I didn't test the truncated file on my home PC at all. But the original file is what I dumped into the root of C: which didn't give me any joy either.

What's the chance of ksl's suggestion with a corrupted dll file for OO.o having some bearing on the problem?
I don't think it's corrupted, I think when Open Office was installed, the conversion on the subfolders didn't take place, it only converted the main folder. There should have been an option to refresh all cells. If the driver is sitting in the system folder it will automatically overide any other format extentions, because the folder has already been changed to OO.

I notice we have had problems with Microsoft Office 7, becuase it isn't compatible with other versions from 2002/3, Microsofts way of saying upgrade or downgrade!

Actually, windows xp is a bastard version and doesn't have too much in common with 97, 2000, 2003 or 2007. I'm not sure but at least now the problem has been fixed.

I did a complete reformat of my system on sunday/monday and happy to say the xl problem is no longer existent. Whatever it was has been eliminated. I haven't reinstalled OpenOffice at this point but without it, the problem is gone.

Additionally, the PC is now almost 2x as fast as it was, (it's been badly in need of a reformat for a long, long time). Actually, it was still running on the original install and it's over 4 years old. As I originally had norton running and the subscription is still good for 6 months or so, I debated for 2 days whether to try something else, but ended up reinstalling it. So far so good.

Thanks all for the help and suggestions. :D

That's great you can do mine now  Yep I think it was something left from OO! Now if you would like to download it again, we can do some problem solving

Ugh just the thought of doing a reformat turns me off computers, must be old age! I'll end up paying for it to be done I guess.

And that's exactly why it's been over 4 years since I've done mine!
