what was it like when you arrived in Singapore first time?

Post by tanusa » Fri, 23 Oct 2009 7:48 am

Hello. Only two more months until our move to Singapore from the US. My husband is there now and is concerned about how we'll all adjust to living so far away, etc. Just wondering... what was it like when you first arrived? What kind of culture shock did you go through? How long did it take to adjust to life there? Was it a difficult adjustment? Any words of wisdom? I have a 5 and 2-year-old and am a stay-at-home mom. thank you!

When I first arrived? Man, Singers was a Malaria-infested swamp then, with few slummy Kampungs for the locals. We had to hack a space out of the jungle for building our first home, and the elephants and tigers kept coming back for years! Things only got tolerable when Hulong "O'Brian" Lee opened the first Irish Pub on the island - of course his wasn't real Guiness, but Tiger beer with soy sauce is still better than no Stout at all ...
