Does anyone know of anywhere to buy a double bed (not queen/king sized). I can't seem to find one anywhere, and I gather they are not popular/don't exist here as stores don't seem to sell linen in double size either.

What is a double bed if not a bed with larger width to accommodate two people - that's exactly what Queen/King size is!
If you are looking for an exact mattress size (which you might have had back home) you're probably as much out of luck here as you would be looking for Singapore Queen/King-size in your home country. (When in Rome ...)
That said, I have heard that there are companies custom-making mattresses in any size and shape, e.g. for yachts. Of course those are not cheap.

For sure you can find them here. Do you need a bed or a mattress?
beppi ~ what if the room is best suited for a double size (which is smaller than a king or a queen)? Or they are looking for a mattres to fit a bedframe they already have? When in Rome? How about when in
home get the bed you want?

Singapore Queen Size (which is, by the way, the same as Australian Queen Size - USA Queen Size is bigger!) is 154cm x 190cm.
In Europe the standard beds are either 140cm, 160cm or 180cm wide and 200cm long.
And I am sure there are more bed size "standards" in the world.
We ditched our bed when we moved to Europe - and again when we came back to Singapore. You wouldn't believe it, but there's less compatibility in beds than in electrical appliances!

True enough, but some people can't go throwing around their $ like that. Our mattress here cost a bomb, so we're committed to a US queen for a while anyway (good thing we have 3 queen sized beds in the house). The goods news is, there are double beds all over Singapore ~ good luck megsie!

If you just looking for a divan base for your existing mattress, just get your measurement right and call up a furniture rental company and they will be able to custom made for you.
By the way, if you are restricted by space, you can consider super single [with or without pull up mattress]. Double bed is normally 4' wide and singapore queen is 5' while supersingle is 3.5'.
Cheers
