Diving for Beginners

Post by Ralff » Sun, 11 Oct 2009 3:32 pm

Hi,

anyone interested in joining for diving lessons?

I'd like to do a beginner's diving course and am looking for recommendations as to where to go.

You could do worse than these guys:

Ex-Orpheus Dive. Quite a few other dive shops nearby on Beach Rd as well.

My sis once joined a course from www.diventures.com.sg.

So far, compared with other courses taken up by my friends, they provide the best price.

We got our PADI Open Water with Deep Blue Dive. We did the classroom and pool session in Singapore and the 5 open water dive in Pulau Aur over 2 weekends. Quite fast. Reliable and good. Now I am looking out for diving buddies for a short trip to Sipadan Sabah. Anyone interested?

Guys,
Don't, don't, please don't chose a diving course based on price......

The market is competitive, so generally there are only a few ways to drop the price on a course, which isn't usually in the best interest of the student

It's true that price should not determine your choice of school. It's quite a risky sport so it's important to have a reliable dive master. We paid $500 for the whole package including dive suits etc.

The sites in West Malaysia (Pulau Tioman, Pulau Aur) will be closed from Oct to Mar 10 due to monsoon season. You may want to check out some other places such as Sabah - Pulau Sipadan. You can fly direct to Tawau. Sipadan is 3rd best dive site in the world. Check it out with Borneo Divers. I've not been there but seen the pictures - many different underwater species.

Good luck!

Hi guys,

Seems too late to send in my reply but I'll try anyhow.

This period till mid/late March is the monsoon season and most open water diving courses will have to be referred to places like Phuket or Bali, bringing up the total cost of the basic open water diving package.

From what I know, there are a few dive shops doing open water courses at Bintan during this period. The place is closer, travel period is relatively shorter and cost is lower as well.

Think one of the guys mentioned deep blue, I believe they conduct open water courses at Bintan, you can check them out.

Cheers.
