I think it is unavoidable. I had been out of Singapore for two years living in the UK. I had been out of the airport for five minutes when I realised that my in laws and the rest of Singapore don't understand my cockney. On I went toning it down and still trying to keep up decent grammar and pronunciation until in the evening they started overcharging me at the Kopitiam at which point I through grammar and decent pronunciation over board and went back to a bit of Singlish to see the bill half.

it's not about picking up the singlish habit but have to speak like the local, otherwise they will not understand you if you are speaking the queen's english!

ok or not?

Singlish really confuses me I have no chance of ever being able to pick it up but I do find myself saying 'can' or 'cannot' when I'm on the phone booking appointments for deliveries etc but that's as far as it goes.
