I'm afraid I'm inclined to agree that it's a hoax. If the cameraman on the other vessel managed to snap that photo do you think he would have got a pic or two of it on the boat? Something pretty fishy there.

1. It requires lot of luck but seems plausible
2. It immediately rises suspicions to its authenticity and it's probably already vetted by few thousand of people - by now it should already surface
...unless nobody really cares (everything gets shopped nowadays)

just a response to x9200's comment that almost everything is shopped nowadays and some are passed off as the real thing just like the photo of which SE and SMS are questioning the authenticity...

Some of them (i.e. BritneyS, p.2) seems to be double retrofitted to emphasize the severity of the fake. It would require some special skills to make her skin discoloration and freckles that well pronounced in so call genuine image

That's okay. I found a larger version online, blew it up to fit on an A4 sheet of paper and did a laser colour of it and brought it home and taped it to my son's bedroom door.
