You need to work on your exposure there, and stick to the basics before you start to play around with HDR -- both shots are badly overexposed. See how the palm trees look frizzy with blue tinges against a flat white sky, and how half the dog's face is pure white? That means your digital camera's sensor is overloaded with too much light for those parts and you're losing all the detail.

Yeah, I guess you could call them overexposed if i didn't overexpose them on purpose =/
