Body Fat Measurement

I am a member of Fitness First, they have these 'Tabita' body fat measuring machines but they always seem to be wrong +/- 10%

Does anyone know where I can find a more accurate method?
I have tried calipers but they are also pretty variable.

Ideally I want to try the Hydrostatic method - my google searches came up with nothing in Singapore !

:D

I use the "Omron" weighing machine to measure the body, visceral fats, body age...accurate stuff

Yeah, Omron has been trying to get it right for some time. They still haven't got it as accurate as Tanita InnerScan monitor yet. That's why most Doc's also use Tanita as well. What I find is that most do not know how to really use the innerscan monitors. My body fat fluctuates between 10.5 and 12.8 from one day to the next. And that's weighing at the same time every day. If you weigh after eating or going about your business and weight whenever, your weight and body fat will fluctuate widely. When I started my diet on 13 July 2007, my body fat was around 32%. 22 weeks and 26 kilo later, my body fat was done to 10.5% on June 16 2007. Today 14 months later I weight about 1~2 kilos more than my finish weight but it varies between my finish wieight and +2 kg. My current body fat % I've noted above. It's averages around 11.4%. Tanita scales actually are the most accurate scales you can buy as a retail consumer and they are the benchmark by which all other electronic multifunction scales are guaged. The full Cat Scan and the Hydrostatic methods are the most accurate with the Cat Scan the best as that will not only give accurate measurements but with isolate the areas as well. I don't know of any hydrostatic facility here unless one of the hospitals has one.

thanks for the replies... i was hoping someone may have used one of the hyrdostatic things at a beauty clinic or something...

I saw Omron online... I'm kinda loathed to spend too much on something that may be inaccurate. Would prefer to pay a premium for something I know will be correct.

Presumably the cat scan method exposes you to radiation ?

I guess I might ask my doctor.... or.. maybe body building association of singapore.. if there is one...

@SMS: any recommended place to check on body fat %? Or, perhaps, a good dietitian/nutritionist with that service?

I doubt if there is a hydrolastic suspension tank in Singapore at all. I used a Tanita scale which was touted by independent testing sources to be 97% accurate. But of course, it wasn't able to measure body cavity fat. My new scales (can't remember the name at the moment) have a handle to pull up with sensors and it actually does measure body fat in different areas but I don't know how accurate it is. I don't think accuracy is all that important, just consistency. Thereby if consistent you can see if you are gaining more or getting rid of it.

Rather than using calipers, I think the Tanita scale will be better. Across google, I see another sms in newyouforum-dot-com (I assume that's you). I'll check Takashimaya then :D

I use the Dynaforce contraption. You tap in your weight, age, height and activity level and then it measures the conductivity from palm to palm. There's some extrapolation involved, but I think it's pretty accurate. Well, I'm not really looking for 100% accuracy either, just some consistency, yeah.

Yep, been a supermoderator over there for the past 5+ years since I lost all that weight!

I'm using an Omron KaradaScan now. I think it must be similar to what Max Headroom is using. The principle is the same.

Do you buy the BF511 outside Singapore? Cause I can only see the similar model, but with different number.

They change models like women change clothes. Don't remember what the model number was. The link I provided was just one that looks similar. I'd have to find the instruction manual to tell which model it is. I'll look when I go home tonight, but Omron I got at a larger Guardian Pharmacy in one of the shopping centres (forget which one thought as it was probably 3 years ago.)

Actually mine looks like the HBF-358.

Hello happydude,
Taylor Tempered Body Fat Scale is the best body fat scale. I was using it for last 2 years and it is very accurate.

Actually, they are only slightly accurate. The hydrostatic method is the best but unfortunately there are none to be found in Singapore that are readily accessible (I' started looking for them around 2008 to no avail either.)

Hello,
If this product is not found in Singapore then you can buy it from Ebay dot com or Amazon dot com
