Mandarin-speaking maids

Post by jpatokal » Fri, 14 Aug 2009 12:38 pm

Is there any way to get a native Mandarin-speaking maid in Singapore? I'm pretty sure I already know the answer, but just to confirm that my thoughts are correct...

* Singaporeans willing to work as maids are usually a) unwilling to take care of children and/or b) unlikely to be truly fluent in Mandarin.
* FDWs may be brought in from "Bangladesh, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Macau, Malaysia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Philippines, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, and Thailand", but I presume the actual supply of maids from Taiwan is effectively zero, and same is true for Hong Kong and Macau (where they'd speak Cantonese anyway).
* There are Malaysian/Indonesian/Filipino maids of Chinese descent, and some maid agencies claim that these include Mandarin speakers. Would I be correct in assuming that most, if not all of these, grew up speaking other dialects and only learned "kitchen Mandarin" on the job?

And here's a previous thread on the topic.
