Visa and Pay in Singapore

Postby sushil.jn » Thu, 13 Aug 2009 7:08 pm

Hi All,

I am a software engineers with of 5 Years experience in SAP , Java and ESS/MSS.

I have been provided with a appointment letter from a MNC at Singapore. The organization has more than 1000 employers.

Presently my basic pay is 1000 S$ a month at India.

My Query is:

1. What pay should I be agreeing upon at Singapore?
2. The organization, had said it cannot offer me sponsor me the visa and will have to apply by my own. Can you please let me know, how should I proceed further getting a visa/work permit/S pass……?

First, the MNC is screwing you around. The ONLY organization that can apply for your S-Pass or EP is the company that you are going to work for. You CANNOT apply 'on your own'.

I would be very wary of this company. They are already lying to you.

Thanks for your reply...

I was informed by the organisation as i will not be offer relocation or sponsorship to work in Singapore.

i also checked with singa government, and got the below reply...

We wish to inform that any foreigner, who wishes to take up employment in
Singapore, must first obtain a job offer from a Singapore-registered
employer. Subsequently, the employer will need to apply for an appropriate
Work Pass based on the criteria stipulated by Ministry of Manpower (MOM).

There are three main types of Work Passes namely the Work Permit, S Pass and Employment Pass:

1) Work Permit
If a foreigner is offered a job with a monthly basic salary of not more
than SGD$1,800, the employer may apply for a Work Permit for the foreigner.
However, there are source controls and the requirement of company?s
dependency ceiling for recruitment/employment of foreigners under the
prevailing Work Permit policies.

2) S Pass
If a foreigner is offered a job with a monthly basic salary of at least
SGD$1,800, the employer may apply for a S Pass for the foreigner. S Pass
applicants will be assessed on a points system, taking into account
multiple criteria including salary, education qualifications, skills, job
type and work experience.

3) Employment Pass
If a foreigner is offered a job with a monthly salary of more than
SGD$2,500 and he/she possesses acceptable professional/tertiary
qualifications, the employer may apply for an Employment Pass (EP) for the
foreigner.

So how should i proceed further, as i could become eligable to work at Singapore?

There is only ONE way. Your potential employer must apply for the work pass, S-Pass, or EP. Until an employer applies and is successful you cannot work in Singapore.

End of story. Sorry.

Your company needs to sponsor you in the sense that they endorse all the paperwork you would need to apply for an employment pass. Check with them on this, when they say they're not sponsoring does that mean:

1) They're endorsing the paperwork but not paying the application fee of $30 per year (in the case of employment pass)?
or
2) They're not endorsing the paperwork and not paying the application fee.

If it's no.1, it's ok, you can still get an employment pass. If it's no.2, then please don't proceed.

Also, asking for salary, you may want to factor in RENTAL!! as that's the single most expensive monthly expense here in Singapore. A medium size room could cost you easily $600 per month. If I were you, I would ask for at least 3000, that could be underpaid or overpaid depends on the company hiring, economic situation, and of course luck. By all means, do your best to get a good headstart if you want to come to Singapore.

All the best to you!
