The car psyche is very different in the US than most other parts of the world. The only place that might be similar is Australia. I and many of my friends growing up actually built our first cars from parts purchased in junk yards.
Yes the Germans build the undisputed finest sedans on any road and the Italian sports cars are amazing works of art but Americans (unless from New York) are motor heads. In our minds owning a car (although not true) is a right.
