I'm sorry you had to find out the hard way. Really. :(

Sadly yours is an illegal tenancy so you may have little recourse.

I'm surprise the landlord allowed it to go to court as he could be in much greater trouble than you.

You could write a compliant letter to the HDB.

In the extreme they could evict him from his HDB flat.
Or put a stop to his excessive subletting.
Won't help you and will make things difficult for the current tenants as well, but he won't be cheating any more students.

When in Singapore, trust no one (even family?) :(

Thats a pretty sad state of affairs when you start having that sort of attitude

It's the only state to be in if you are here for any length of time or are married to a local spouse. Sad? Yes. Fact? Yes. :-|

Imagine going through life being naive and trusting and constantly ending up on the wrong end of the stick....

Play me out once, shame on you...
Play me out twice, shame on me.... I believe that's how it goes.

I am afraid I have to disagree strongly here:
In my experience (12 years in Singapore), people here are not less honest or trustworthy than elsewhere, in fact more so than in many other places.
Of course there are some bad apples, like everywhere, and it is prudent to protect oneself against those.
A feeling for whom you can or cannot trust helps, like everywhere. Foreigners, coming from a different cultural background, do not have this feeling (yet) and thus are cheated more easily.
But, believe me, it is better for your sanity to not fall into the "everybody around me is bad" trap - otherwise you'll hate your stay here! (That's the typical "Expat-who's-not-really-here"-syndrome.)
I always try to have my life ruled by the 99% friendly and honest people around me, not by the small minority of crooks. I haven't been disappointed often!

Have a nice week,
Frank

Morality is a cultural thing so you both are right.
