Where to live?????

Post by Lochsong » Sun, 19 Jul 2009 8:15 pm

My husband has the chance of a job in Indonesia which comes with a family package. So myself and the kids would be living in Singapore and he would be getting the ferry across at the weekends.

I honestly don't know where to start! Have been looking at maps and this forum all weekend and there is just so much info - I need a bit of guidance!
:o
I understand that Singapore isn't huge and it would be easy ti get from ferry terminals to anywhere but we wouldn't want to be more than 30mins from a terminal (I understand there are 2!).

The boys would be 3 and 1 so ideally need a very family orientated area with plenty for the kids to do and preferably lots of expats for company for me through the week. They love the beach so close to one would be an advantage but not essential.

So what districts should I be looking at?? I am not sure I like the though of a high rise so what alternatives are there?? was thinking terraced houses but have no idea where to start!! :???:

I take it that by "Indonesia" you mean one of the Indonesian islands nearer to Singapore. These would be Bintan and Batam. They are served by different ferry terminals.

If your husband is working in Bintan, he will be taking the ferry from the Tanah Merah terminal which is in the East Coast. In this case you should be looking at housing in and around Upper East Coast Road. You will have PLENTY of choices and be surrounded by expats. You also have the (not very good) beach at East Coast Parkway to avail of. You will have a choice of high rise condos, low rise condos and terraced or semi-d or bungalow housing here.

If he is working in Batam, you will need to be near the Harbourfront Ferry Terminal which is slightly West of the Singapore's Central Business District. Again you will have quite a few condos to choose from and you'll also have plenty of expats around. The Caribbean is pretty nice and almost next to Harbourfront. Alternatively, if budget allows, you can rent a house or condo on Sentosa island and be VERY close to some nice (though artificial) beaches. A few minutes further West will take you to the Pasir Panjang area which houses and low rise condos aplenty.

Either way you should be fine.

Thanks for you reply! :D

Yes forgot to say its Batam so 2nd area you mention. Have been looking all weekend but the west coast and CBD seem soooo expensive (and small) compared to the East Coast - I much prefer districts 15/16.

My husband has said it is fine wherever we stay as long as it suits the needs of me and the boys. Its just important we are happy and have lots of things to do around us!! He only has to travel back a friday night and a monday morning.

Its quite tricky trawling through all the info!! :???:
