Moving away

Post by Singapore Newbie » Mon, 06 Jul 2009 9:05 pm

I am planning to leave Singapore and I have a question about closing bank accounts. If I have credit card debt, will the bank require me to pay it all before leaving or can I keep the account open and keep paying it as usual online?

I have a lot of unexpected costs associated with the move and can't afford to pay off all the credit card debt right away. I should be able to pay it all off in a few months, though.

Does anyone know?

Thanks.

I see no need at all to tell your bank that you're leaving. If possible, switch to electronic statements instead of mailed ones (or redirect them to a friend's house, office etc), and they'll never even realize you're gone.

I guess I assumed the bank might find out when my EP gets cancelled. Since I will require tax clearance, perhaps the bank finds out then? Hopefully not...
