immunisation,playgroups and music classes

Post by abee » Wed, 17 Jun 2009 12:33 pm

Hi we are moving to Singapore with our 2 boys (3yrs & 9 months) in early August and I was wondering if there is a system for immunizations or something similar to the Maternal child care nurse (Australia) and Plunket (NZ).
Also we are looking to move near Bukit Batok or a similar area and was wondering if anyone could recommend a playgroup or group music class.
Thanks in advance

I just moved here and got stung $750 for immunisation shots for a four month year old. My company didnt cover it because its preventative medicine. I think if the kids are enrolled at school they get covered. Someone with more experience may let you know for sure.

Im getting the rest done in Australia by timing when my wifes flights back to OZ where its free because of high taxes.

Are you serious? We've just moved over from the UK and my toddler is due for some pre-school boosters. I also have a 9 month old as well who will need some more jabs soon. Can anyone shed any more light on how it works over here?

Thanks

I started my baby off with immunisations at IMM in Camden Medical Centre. The first lot was about $500, the second lot was $370. Even though the insurance paid I thought these charges were quite high so I checked out my local poly clinic. I telephoned IMM and asked what jabs were next on the list and how much they would be. I was quoted $372. I went to my poly clinic and had the exact same jabs for $74....
Even though I absolutely think Dr Mark Loh at IMM is the best paedatrician I have ever met, I do not see the point in spending so much for basic jabs. I now do all the basic stuff at the poly clinic and anything I need more indepth advice on I take her to IMM.
I am on a dependency pass by the way - not PR so I think the charges were slightly higher for me at the poly.

Not sure which state you are from. When i was living in Melbourne, i had problems with settling my daughter and discussed it with a local maternal health nurse, she made an appointment for a council nurse/worker to do a home visit (within 3 weeks). She was brilliant, stayed for 5hrs and came back a few times to check up.

We are in Melbourne but no such service in our area, I have managed to contact a midwife who had good advice and said she support me. So fingers crossed we will have him settled before we get to there

We used the contented little baby book by Gina Ford and our baby slept through from 7 weeks (7pm - 10pm feed then 10:45 - 7am). there is also a supporting website so when the routine goes a bit wrong you can get help with specifics.

Actually i think it would be better for you to learn the techniques, with all the traveling, time differences and heat, your little one will be unsettled again.

If he is on formula, bring a few cans. The formula available in SG is not the same and double the price. Especially stage 2 formula, i found it to be sweeter.

Thank you all the great advice again, the formula thing is very interesting, I think because he will be almost 1 we will wean him to milk befpre we come so we don't have the formula issue.

I heard that formula in singapore was expensive but we went shopping and everywhere its slightly cheaper than Melbourne even at Jasons. We did try an american brand here and found it sweeter. Dont have a problem with sleeping she slept through 9-6.30 since 3 weeks old. We tried to let her take alot before she goes to sleep. formula fills them up I think more than breast milk but as shes got older she has rejected formula. She is onto solids now at 4 months and that fills her up although she wants the comfort of breats feeding before she sleeps now.
My next one will most likely be a terror.

Nath21 you're very lucky to have had such a good sleeper at 3 weeks - I'm very jealous.

Abee - you might want to try Birth & Beyond, Parentlink or Mother & Child for the sleep settling issues all three have people who would be able to help.

I'm still breastfeeding my little one but have heard from my friends that s26 follow on milk (6months +) seems to be vanilla flavoured here or at least a lot sweeter so if you can hang on a few months and go straight to cow's milk so much the better.

Thanks for all the great advice since posting Henry has been sleeping through the night Yay!
Unfortunately Henry refused the Breast at 7 months and started biting instead so we will be on formula although I will try to wean him on to cows milk.
