Information Technology- Degree Required?

Post by KiwiGreg » Sun, 14 Jun 2009 12:13 pm

Hi guys,

Curious as to the importance of a bachelors/masters degree as a pre-requisite for IT positions in Singapore.

In New Zealand and Australia (and the UK from what friends over there have told me), it's not essential to have a degree-level qualification to secure or advance to a senior position.

I note most of the job vacancies state that a degree is a must, even for entry-level positions. Are university qualifications considered a basic job requirement, or are recruiters and companies more pragmatic and flexible in their candidate selections?

I'm on a reasonably good wicket right now, in a senior position, but am interested in seeing where I might be easily able to transfer to when things pick up again.

Your advice and experiences appreciated.

This is Singapore. Here, most employers require a degree. However, having said that, if you have umpteen years of experience in a niche environment or are making big bucks (7K/mo up) then the employer doesn't usually care about the degree and after 7K/mo mom doesn't require it either. Below 7K/mo you will be required to have the degree or suitable experience in order to get the Employment Pass. See the following link for more information directly from the horses mouth.

Thanks for the response. I'm over 7k / month in NZD. The key will be to ensure that equivalent Singapore positions are able to match or better that in SGD.

The New Zealand dollar is slightly stronger than the SGD, so the only catch may be regional variances in rates. NZ has typically paid below international averages (hence why 1 million out of 5 million Kiwi's live overseas) so I may be in luck.
