ANA All Nippon Airlines

Post by cbavasi » Sun, 31 May 2009 9:41 pm

Has anyone flown this airline for a long haul flight? I can't find a lot of information and have never flown with them before. Any advice appreciated!

Hi there,

I took ANA a couple of times from Europe to Japan. I was actually very happy with them apart from one time when they had overbooked J and I was seated in Y (I got a full refund of my fare though apart from the tax, so basically I went for free). Reason it was overbooked was apparently that some government bigwigs had to travel urgently... While I always struggle in Y (I am 6ft 7in), I must say their Y was very good compared to others' and I was happy with the service as I got a seat at the emergency exit.

Feel free to have a look through these reviews: http://www.airlinequality.com/Forum/ana.htm

ANA is very good company. We took it a bunch of time during the 3 years we spent in Japan, and did the Paris/Tokyo 2 times a year. We took it also for domestic and to go to USA.

My advice is to try to get a "premium economy" seat: larger, more space for the legs, few extra item like Sony noise canceling head set,... If you can't get one or already booked, then ask for one when you check in.

where you flying from/to and in which cabin? you've not mentioned what you're comparing NH to... (SQ? JA?) or what your expectations were..

i've taken NH once the states and the service was good in business class. i also liked the privacy shield between passengers not always found in other J seats.

my main grouse was that the AV systems got turned off after the first "prepare for landing" announcement - 45 mins before touchdown.

no "gaijin" issues either, from my observations...

but i hear that in certain configs, NH's seats are smaller than other airlines - especially so in coach. so you might want to consult a place like seatguru or seatexpert for reference.

NH is replacing a whole bunch of their planes as we speak... you might get a better product.

Thanks for the feedback... I'm traveling to LAX and they are showing fantastic fares. I'd be traveling in coach with 2 kids (I ask - which is worse? )... I called to see what premium economy would be - but better off buying a business class ticket since they can only book premium economy on the Japan to LAX leg and it worked out only a couple hundred less than business the whole way (then defeats the purpose of me trying to get a good fare :)
I usually do the SQ Executive Economy to LAX but it's only business now so I'm not sure if I should just go with what I know (SQ Economy) or save a bit and fly ANA.

you can ask for premium eco while checking in. If there's free seats, they can gave it to you. As you still get the same food than eco, it doesn't change a thing for them if it's used or not.

ANA is easily among the better airlines . . . teh food alone makes it worthwhile.

Flight attendants are a great bunch of well-trained people and seating is, surprisingly, not a problem.

ANA is up there with Cathay and Singapore Airlines
One in the hand is worth two of something

NH does op-up passengers, but usually for those paying full fare.

what's more, CB has 2 kids in tow... makes it a unlikely IMO... even with a top-tier FF card!

if it's not a full flight, i think asking to be put in the middle and for adjoining seats to be blocked off might be more do'able.

Thanks so much for all the feedback. Had a look at some of the review links - very helpful. This is very sad - but ultimately I called to ask about a power point in Economy (for the portable DVD). They are not offered on the plane to LAX in coach. 18 hours of Dora the Explorer is actually going to make the trip bearable (probably for the rest of the passengers too!) I also had a long think about the 50 minute layover in Japan and how I'd have to rescreen with 2 kids and not sure I'd make it in time ... so bit the bullet and booked SQ. GTK about ANA tho - would definitely consider on my own (if I should be so lucky :) )
