Instruments and Fabric

Post by anniedaynow » Fri, 29 May 2009 8:59 pm

Hi there,

I'm looking for a good music/guitar store in Singapore that doesn't charge through the roof. I live in Geylang so anywhere out this end is as convenient as any.

While I'm at it, I'm also looking for somewhere to do cloths alterations as well as make new cloths with my own designs and material in mind.

Cheers,
annie

There are a few in the Bras Basah Complex (level 2 or 3) next to the National Library. From memory the one opp popular (not next door) is very reasonable. Have often wanted to buy myself a guitar there but resisted as can't ply (LOL). Unfinished business methinks and if I find a crappy second hand acoustic I might have a go at learning.

Cheers for that.

As for a second hand guitar, keep an eye on the 'Stuff for Sale' section on Gumtree Singapore. All sorts of affordable decent stuff pops up on that.

if you don't have a mate to advise you on a second hand purchase, just pop into a store and get some advice from the guy there. you don't have to spend a bomb on a new guitar. there is a good store in the brass barash(may not be spelt properly). i didn't really look at the guitars and their prices since i was there for a tuner but go have a look.

by the way thanks for that tip bafana. there is some great book shops in that mall too.

Excelsior Hotel mall near Funan Mall seems to be one of the best place to find guitar stuff. It's a little bit shabby, but basement and 1st floor have good stores. I just started to learn to play the guitar 2 months ago: learning with a teacher really helps... I tried alone but i was going nowhere.

I can give you the ref of my guitar if you want (it's a Yamaha), my teacher says he really like it, and want to recommend this model to his new students (actually he wants to buy one too :D )

To tune a guitar, just buy a tuner :) It cost like 10/15SGD, make sure you get the kind that you'll clip on the head of the guitar. Then check on youtube, there's probably a video of someone demonstrating how to tune a guitar. (would be easier to understand than if i tried to explain with words)

if you need to do alterations or even make a dress, go to Jean's satin in Holland Village shopping centre. She even made my friends wedding gown!!

If you were at town area, there's also a Maestro guitar shop at the esplanade. Friendly staffs there.

Share a little bit of my guitar learning experience here. :) I'm totally newbie to guitar. And would like to self learn just for fun & de-stress. So I decided to learn from the internet myself.

At first, I dont even realiesed what's the different between acoustic guitar & classical guitar. So after browsed thru internet info got myself familiar, I came to the decision to buy a 2nd hand acoustic guitar, budget below S$100. I got myself a J&D acoustic model DG-4SEQ and im happy with it.

The below are some useful forum website you may want to check it out:
