You can only buy the phone from Singtel with one of their contracts.

The first iPhone can be unlocked fully but it is not compatable with any network here in Singapore. The 3G phone can be 'jailbreaked' to work on other networks [

It does work if you read and follow the instruction but if you decide to do this and it wrecks the phone I ain't at fault!

I know a person who bought an I-phone in Hong Kong and bought a Starhub SIM card and data plan for it. Starhub seems to have much better data plans.
But Singtel is the exclusive distributor for I-phone in Singapore.
Don't know what you might find in Bangkok or even KL.

It is also not legal unlocked in Thailand. Basically you still do not have warranty. If you stay in Singapore for most of the year, it is better to buy one from here. Some shops might try to help you fix the software issues that may arise albeit for a small fee. If it spoils here and you bought it in Thailand, there goes your $800+
