Singaporean web sites for on-line shopping

Post by RisingSun » Sat, 23 May 2009 6:01 pm

Can someone give me some web sites for on-line shopping from Singaporean stores? I looked at Tang's web site, but they don't have on-line shopping. A large market place like XXXXXXXXXXXXx would be nice.

Sorry in advance if this topic has already been posted. Looked, but didn't find.

Why would someone posting from a Norman Oklahoma IP address be concerned with either a Singapore OR Korean online shopping site? :???:

Maybe they want to pay horrendous shipping charges from Singapore to Norman?

Maybe because the location of an IP address has nothing to do with the location of the poster?

(Like, where am I posting from?)

Anyways.... Is there a good online place to order from?

How painful is it to get amazon.com shipped in here?

Interesting. Generally, the IP address has everything to do with physical location because IP addresses are assigned by block to various geographic regions.

So, you say you live near Little India and yet

Lookup IP Address: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

General Information

Hostname: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx-oregon.hfc.comcastbusiness.net
ISP: Comcast Business Communications
Organization: Comcast Business Communications
Proxy: None detected
Type: Cable/DSL

Geo-Location Information

Country: United States
State/Region: OR
City: Salem
Latitude: 44.95
Longitude: -123.0198
Area Code: 503

So... given that there are very few service providers in Singapore, this is interesting information. From my experience you are either in the US or using some sort of VPN/proxy arrangement with someone who has a PC in the US connected to the above IP address.

PS: Don't worry about the OP - 1 post and 50 bux says spammer.

Well, if you want to verify my bona-fides I think I posted a bit about my experiences with Star Hub here ....

Still my question remains... how hard is it to get Amazon.com shipped here? Books here are significantly more expensive then other places in the world.

It is easy to get books shipped here. A book costs around US$12 and up depending upon the speed to ship so you lose a lot of the savings. But I have ordered books that I could not find in Singapore.

I think the operative word is generally. There are so many exceptions to the rule it makes geographic location via IP address quite an art , its not all that reliable

If i were to post on my work laptop at work (rather than my home computer via starhub) , it might well show me in the US (given its huge US company with its own class A domain. It used to be that a class A domain was assumed to be for a given region, but that is a long gone imo. ) even though I am sitting here in Changi.

In terms of Amazon, use them all the time for books that are hard to get here. I've never had trouble with delivery and if you order a couple of books the shipping costs are supportable.

Interesting ............. gentlemen, I'd say that perhaps you are not quite familiar with the ways of the shopaholic!! ;)

I've shopped online from Saks 5th ave, many other US sites, shopping sites around Europe - mostly France and Italy, in fact my preference is always to shop online rather than face the shops and if that allows me to shop happily around the world then all the better for that! As for amazon, I've used Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.com and amazon.fr - all dependant on what I can buy!

So, in response to RisingSun's question, no sadly, Singapore does appear to be very much a go out and visit the shops country - I've looked in the past not so much for the major department stores but for little shops.

Even ebay doesn't seem quite as big as it is in the UK - although I haven't bought anything from ebay in aaages.

Personally, I'd much rather have my purchases (clothes, shoes) factory wrapped and pressed than off a rail in a shop where countless people have tried it on! Also the thrill of receiving a parcel is such fun!

Most of my clothes come either from a French shopping website or designer brands from an Italian site - if I could buy from Singaporean shops while in the UK, I probably would too!
