where to live in Singapore

Post by kellden » Fri, 22 May 2009 7:42 am

Hi, we're a couple of 35 year olds relocating from Hong Kong - 2 kids (age 3,1),one dog (boxer), helper and we want somewhere with a great expat community feel, low rise preferable. Also, about how much can you negotiate off the listed rent price in these crazy whacky times? We used to live in Discovery Bay in HK and loved it for the community, so... any ideas? Thx so much

East Coast Siglap are would probably fit the bill, great for kids with the beach close by and a thriving expat/local community. There are plenty of low rise condos but they tend to be the smaller developments. You'll need to take into account exactly where work will be and the commuting time.

As for negotiating rental prices, it's definitely a leasee's market and there are literally thousands of empty apartments up for rent. If I couldn't get in the region of 20-25% off the asking price I'd politely say thank you but no thanks and walk away. There will be loads more apartments you can choose from.

Local landlords, particularly the older generation, would prefer to leave their rental apartment empty for 6 months rather than reduce the rent. It's all to do with pride and not wanting to lose face.

Hi there
thanks so much for your help.
I must say i do like the sound of the east coast. We are definatly interested in a slightly quieter/chilled area for our girls.
Are there bars/resturants/ supermarkets in the area?
We like to be a little bit out but not too far.
Great tip about the rent too will keep that in mind.
We are really looking forward to this move.
Thanks

Upper East Coast Road Siglap area has a number of good bars, well that's where I'll be tonight \:D/ It also has a good varied choice of eateries. Parkway Parade is closeby for all your shopping needs.
