Geeting a Job Before

Post by HNL2SIN » Wed, 20 May 2009 10:20 am

I wanted to check with others if my thinking is correct. I am thinking that applying for job when you are already in Singapore is better then trying to find one from overseas.

I guess my thinking is that if I have proved I am serious enough to move to Singapore then an employer would be more likely to hire me.

Do not get me wrong...I would love to have a job before I arrived

Thanks for any input :)

Don't want to bust your bubble or anything, but the employer doesn't care whether you are here or not. Lots of people come here on holidays and look for jobs. Most spend a lot of time here and go home broke & empty handed. And that was before the recession started. Now, you would be smarter to try from home rather than spending lots of hard earned dosh on what probably would turn out to be a fruitless journey. Course you could get lucky but I sure wouldn't chance it in this climate.

Unfortunately SMS is right. Also from what I hear getting an EP is not that easy any more now that we have a recession. Your best bet would be to look for a job from where you currently are then fly out to Singapore if you have secured a second interview following a phone interview.

If you read between the lines of the speeches of the last few days you might notice a small shift from the usual: we need to attract foreign talent, to Singapore will be attractive to its citizens/PRs and foreign talent alike. This might mean that Singapore is becoming more protectionist on the labour front and EPs might be harder to get going forward.

All very well trying for entrepreneur pass but unless one can show some outstanding talent, ability or simply a skill in demand I doubt they would get very far. Being a computer contractor would seem meaningless in the current climate.

The world of IT is hurting. Many capital projects have been delayed. I don't know what kind of contracting you do but salaries tend to be low for entry to mid level (and sometimes above) positions.

You might trot over to jobsdb.com.sg and have a sniff around.
