elusive 6-month contracts & other issues

Post by sezsarah » Tue, 12 May 2009 5:51 pm

I will be in Singapore at the beginning of June. I'm still looking for accommodation for a period of 6 months and finding it increasingly difficult to have a clear overview of the market!!! :???:
Any tips on how to go about renting? Personal experience would be appreciated- I've checked out all the known sites: Craigslist, ., you name it!
Will be working in the Science Park so anywhere BUT North and East would do.. Is it recommendable to move in with other expats or does it really not matter in the slightest? I'm incredibly unfussy.
HELP, bewildered and very stressed damsel in distress would REALLY appreciate some advice! Thank you

Not only here but my wife and I rented a bedroom (with ensuite shower/toilet) in a 3-bedroom HDB flat for a month while construction was being undertaken at our place simply by taking down the number at an MRT station. We paid 50% more than the asking price because it was such a short rental.

It was excellent though because the owner was a former cook and we ended up bringing him ingredients so that he could make yums meals.

I know there are month by month rentals... but honestly, I cannot afford to be working and moving continuously around for 6 months.

Month by month doesn't mean you're limited to one month -- they'll be more than happy to snag a tenant for six months and give you a juicy discount too.

The other option is to transfer into the tail end of the lease of somebody who's leaving Singapore before their contract end, which will be cheaper and make everybody involved happy. See the Classifieds.

Now that's good news! I'd understood 1-month rentals as generally limited rentals. Good to hear that I was wrong about that one! Cheers!

Sorry, budget is too low. The unit is a studio downtown. It will cost at least $3000 per month.
