Returning to Singapore for NS with Dual Citizenship

Post by kelso36 » Fri, 08 May 2009 12:36 pm

Hello, I was wondering if anyone has found themselves in this situation before..
I am planning to return to Singapore at the age of 23.
I guess I am classified as a NS deserter currently, having left Singapore at the age of 14.
I know there was minor correspondance between mindef and my parents at the age of 15 or 16, with nothing coming to a conclusion, my parents wanted to defer it til the age of 21 and then hopefully renounce my SG Citizenship. Anyways, over all of that now - I've been through most of the topics on this forum, I am aware that there is really no way around this.

My current dillema is, if I am willing to return to Singapore to do my National Service, what is the protocol mindef/CMPB goes about handling a case like mine? Is there a likelyhood I will be imprisoned upon arrival to Singapore? What are the chances of having jail time/a fine forced upon me? And how soon would I be expected to be forced to choose to renounce one of my citizenships?

Apologies if a topic such as this has been covered previously, wasnt able to spot one in anycase. Appreciate any help!

The best thing to do is to notify mindef before you arrival that you are coming to do your NS. There is a good possibility that you will also be fined and yes, you could be detained but I would doubt that this would happen if you are notifying them of you intentions. The other problem, however, is the holding of dual citizenship after the age of 21. Theoretically they can find you for that as well. What the exact penalties are I'm not sure. But, again, they will not let you renounce until you have done your NS.

sunday's advice is pretty good, given that you left when you were 14 (unlikely that you made that decision yourself).

but i don't think they're gonna put you in the slammer for that.

give CMPB a call from where you're at (www.ns.sg i think has details).

are you mentally and physically prepared for NS tho?

why are you returning at aged 23? and how old are you now?
