Mothers group meetings for new 1st time mums?

Post by polarkitten » Wed, 06 May 2009 10:54 am

Hi there,

Hope you can help.

My husband and I will be moving to Singapore, probably living around the Novena area, in a few months.

I am a 32 year old Aussie mum to a 2 month old son.

I'm interested in meeting up with other 1st time mums on a regular basis as I do here is Sydney.

Does anyone know of organised mothers groups?

Thanks :D

Post by polarkitten » Sun, 17 May 2009 2:47 pm

Thanks Lil'Pea,

Will def be in contact when we arrive. At this stage, it looks like hubby will be leaving for Singapore in about 4 weeks, with bub and I trailing about 6 weeks later.

I'd love to hear from any other mums out there who's like to meet up once we arrive.

Im also very interested if there is an 'Early Childhood Centre' in Singapore as there is throughout Australia - for baby check ups, advice, info etc

Thanks

expectant mother also moving to Singapore in a few months

Post by kpcronan » Mon, 18 May 2009 6:26 pm

Hi - I'm currently 19 weeks pregnant, but will be moving to Singapore in August when I'll be 30 weeks pregnant. I'd love to meet up with new/expectant mums to help make the transition a bit smoother. I'm from the US, but have been living in London for the past 6 years. My husband is Irish and is already in Singapore (for the past 2 weeks). Would love to meet up if you're interested. -Kirsten

Mothers group meetings for new 1st time mums?

Post by izu » Thu, 04 Jun 2009 9:19 am

Hi Ladies,
I'm a Singaporean mum with a 5mth 3 wk old baby gal living in Bukit timah area. Was an expat myself in other countries (UK, Aust, Korea, HK, Thailand, Germany etc.) for some years. Now that we have settled back in Singapore, would love to play host to new foreign mommies.

I did my undergrad in Australia and has recently visited Sydney in March. So, welcome all Aussie mommies. For those from US, welcome too.

Would love to open my place for a gathering when all are ready.

PM me anytime.

Cheers

Looks like we will have our own little group happening!

We absolutely love living in Novena, however we are looking to cut our rental prices so we are trying to get out of our lease at the moment :(

The area is so convenient, 5 mins from Orchard Rd, 2 train stops from Orchard Rd, 3 large shopping centres, lots of Buses, lots of great Apartments AND lots of construction! The noise is a little annoying being at home with a baby, you do get use to it though and everywhere in Singapore has construction!
We are in an old apartment block on Moulmein Rise, right next to the hospital and train and shopping centre. The rents are a bit higher here for the convenience, so it really depends want you want and what you are looking for.
We looove our apartment, lots of large balconies, renovated bathrooms and kitchen, the newer apartments just aren't as big as the old ones so we love the old apartments for size.
Let me know the condos you are looking at and I can let you know my opinion - might help a bit :)

izu - thanks for the offer! A catchup sounds great!
And to all the other ladies - look forward to catching up!

Oh, I also know a GREAT paediatrician and Gynae here, so let me know if you need that info as well...

Hi Izu and Razrock

I am glad to see some action finally going on here! How about meeting up first while the other ladies arrive and settle?

Novena

Post by polarkitten » Tue, 09 Jun 2009 8:44 am

Hi Razrock and girls,

Thanks again for that info on Novena. I think it def sounds like the place for us. At the moment, I'm reseaching on the net and am interested in, Novena Suites, Thompsen Euro Asia, The Springs, Apleton View, 1 Moulmein Rise and Newton Gems.

Any imput you have (or anyone else for that matter!) on any of these condos would be great. I think the max we will be looking at paying will be $4000 a month. We'd prefer a 3 bedder, and pref with a pool and maybe playground for when my son's a bit bigger. Asking too much?!

Thanks girls, and I look forward to meeting you when we arrive!

Emma

Hi Emma,

Yes we love Novena too and don't want to move but need cheaper rent...

This is just my opinion, I am quite fussy and I don't want to scare you off the apartments.
Will you be at home with bubs or going to work here?

Novena is very popular and there is always lots of construction in Singapore.

Will your husbands employer be putting you up for one month at least to find a place? Also, will they provide an agent to take you around to look at places? If they do, you HAVE to find out if you pay the agent fee or if the company will - this is usually ONE months rent, you will also need to put down 2 months rent as bond and one months rent in advance, this really takes your savings... check with the employer first..

Ok NO to Novena Suites as there is construction right behind it! Also $6k, $7.5k for 3 bedroom, there is at least another 12 months on the construction.

Newton Gems is where we originally were in a one bedroom, in 2006 we paid $2200 a month, then 2008 they wanted $4400 - ouch! I did really like Newton Gems though - i think 3 bedrooms for $4k here is tough, there wasn't any listed, so not sure of $ now. Small kitchens, but we didn't cook much! They have a dishwasher too which is nice.

We moved to an old condo not far from Novena Suites 3 bedrooms, renovated for $4600, the rents have come down already though... We knew there was construction but loved the area, also we were both working so didn't really bother us, being home with a bub it does get a bit annoying, I like the doors and windows open for the breeze rather than have the air-con running too much. If you are happy to have the air-con going and windows closed then the noise really disappears, so it is up to you.

Apleton View is next to me and opp construction site - no balcony (i love a balcony) the pool is on the main rd side too, $4200 for 3 bedrooms. I haven't been inside these ones, but it looks nice. It is noisey.

1 Moulmein Rise has apartments listed for $4800-$5500 for 3 bedrooms... down the hill from me and Apleton, near the TB hospital tho :(

$4.5k and $5k for 3 bed @ Thomson Euro Asia... great location... you have to cross main roads or go over the overpass to get the shops and train tho, no balcony, I wouldn't think much noise :)

The springs i found a 2 bed for $4.5k and a 3 bed for $3.5k - hmmm... on a main rd, still close to everything.

I would consider looking at Newton Gems for sure. You really have to just look at heaps of apartments to find the perfect one.

I hope I helped a little bit and didn't put you off!

Hi Izu and babybloom - yes lets meet up first. Cafe or someones house?

Welcome Daisy, and hi to Alicia, Babybloom, Lil'Pea and Izu,

Hope you girls get the ball rolling soon. I look forward to meeting you all in a few months.

Alicia, thanks SO much for all that condo info. You're a star! :D

Would you mind if I sent you a PM as I feel the condo talk is getting rather off the topic of this forum thread? I can send you my email address then, thats if you don';t mind a few more questions!?

Hi Ladies,

Welcome Daisy!

So glad this thread is getting busy - we have to arrange something asap for sure!
Next week ok for everyone? I can't do Monday and Tuesday, but the rest I am good to go.

Emma - I sent you a pm yesterday with my email address as I thought I was way off topic, of course after I posted I realised I could pm - oops!
Let me know if you didn't get the pm...

Alicia
