I'll bet it's a HP, I have two that are suffering and the cost to repair, is just not worth it, and they are only 2 years old. But HP have a trade in, if you buy a new one, I said what's the point, if it's going straight into the bin. In all my computer time, i have never had such a bad notebook, for minor bad build design faults with motherboards. Okay I am aware of the faults, but others using my computers are not, especially with USB ports and power input, so the cables get moved and twisted disturbing the board connections.

Very bad design faults. I have had 3 motherboards under my 1 year guarantee, with the same faults and they are centrino dual core computers. sucks big time for a premium price of 3000$ for one the other was 2K

just get a Mac... I simply works. Pricy indeed, but...no more problem. When i use my mac, i use it for me, i don't spend time trying to make it work, updating something or whatever.

There's no Apple Store in Singapore, which is a bugger, as these "authorised seller" are far from good. They're just people selling Mac, it could be anything else. Very different experience and customer service than in an Apple store. But whatever, products work and are goods.

(sorry it could keep it for me any longer)

Agree with KSL, HP sucks.

I'm on my third Toshiba in probably 10-yrs with only one HD failure on my second one...... though i even still have that one as my fax server in the office.

I only have a niggle on my current one with USB devices but i think the problem is more to do with Vista than the actual hardware.

to the OP: most notebooks that support games (non-integrated graphics) aren't cheap, but u may pick something good up at a computer fair?

i like hp. i think the new DV2 looks nice.

ksl: the HP my wife has came with a 1 year warranty, and it started sputtering even before the warranty lapsed.

control panel indicating lights started flickering and comes on intermittently, the plastic parts flexes and moans like an old bridge.

yet on the same day, i too bought an HP (this was some years back) but mine's still chugging along fine.

i put it down to the price difference. its build quality was impressive too (better parts for high-use areas like usb ports).

i travel with it very regularly and it has taken a lot of abuse, dirt and wear and tear. the only thing changed was its well-used battery.

the only issue i have is with the location of the fingerprint sensor (which i've taped over with a business card).

from now on, i'm only buying business laptops with 3 year international warranties. what i paid was what i got.

because of its premium pricing and target user, i think they're built to last longer than 3 years, which works for me, coz i don't like having to change computers.

well his budget is lower for a Mac thus it defeats the purpose of you saying to get a Mac even if it is good.

I agree with taxico and saying yes, those graphics zai laptop aren't cheap.
Well how well it runs and it's life span really much depend on how you use it, maintaining it well and it shouldn't be a problem really.

My friend bought a DV2 recently too at 1200+ i think, I'm not that sure.
The laptop is pretty neat and well I feel you can get that as it is within your budget and never really heard much problems from it yet (from him) so I think a safer bet for you to get HP ones haha and you can use the remaining if like what ksl said and fix your computer with it LOL!

Final say: Be it any brand, maintain your laptop well.

Maybe you can describe the problems with your laptop and I'll help you solve them. Many problems can be fixed without replacing the whole unit. My belief is that consumers wasting too much money throwing away good, working computers and laptops. It's VERY bad for the environment too.
