Extradition?
I was reading up a few of the threads regarding eligible males in Singapore having to serve their NS terms even when they're not born in Singapore. My question is, does Singapore send extradition requests to other countries if individuals are deemed deserters? All I have heard of this is that Singapore takes no action unless the deserters return to Singapore and are caught at the airport. However, I have not heard of any cases of extradited deserters. If so, what countries cooperate? Thanks.

I've never heard of it happening either. But it's a well known fact that they will pick 'em up in transit should they transit via Singapore (and found out).

Extradition works on the principle of "double criminality": if Mr X has committed a crime in country A and escaped to country B, then country B will usually only agree to extradite if his action is also considered a serious crime in country B. Since avoiding national service is not a crime in those countries where national service doesn't exist, it's usually not possible to extradite NS deserters, and I've never heard of Singapore even trying.
