SAFRA EnergyOne gyms rock

Post by jpatokal » Tue, 31 Mar 2009 6:19 pm

Just wanted to recommend SAFRA's "EnergyOne" gyms to any PRs out there looking for a cheap but good gym. BodyBlitz earlier tipped me off about this option, and I've been a member at SAFRA Mt Faber for a few months now.

Pro:
- Cheap memberships even on a monthly basis: $40/mo off-peak, $70 all hours, and less than that if you sign up long-term
- Decent gym equipment (better than ClubFITT, roughly same level as Cali)
- Aircon locker rooms with rainfall showers (woo!)
- Towel service, free soap, hairdryers etc
- Squeaky clean and well maintained
- Mt. Faber has a humongous larger-than-Olympic pool, jacuzzi and steambath, all included in the price
- Zero hard sell for renewing, personal training, yadda yadda (although PTs are available by request)
- Ang mohs are so rare that the staff are all extra friendly to you

Con:
- Singapore PR and citizen only
- No city center locations
- No organized classes (yoga, bodycombat, etc)
- Strictly enforced off-peak hours ("until 5 PM" means you'd better be signed in by 4)
- Water available, but no drinking fountain -- bring your own container!
- Reportedly gets crowded at peak hours (not a problem at all off-peak though, even on weekends)
- Virtually no sexy young ladies in tight spandex

But if you're just looking for a good place to do your workouts, EnergyOne hits the spot.

I second that. I was a member at the same club for a year around 2004/2005. The only con for me was the opening hours: As a PR I could only workout during the 'offpeak hours' and when I changed jobs it was no longer very easy for me to access the gym at those offpeak hours. But yes, as far as value for money is concerned the place is excellent. I've heard that the nearby Delta Sports ClubFit is pretty good too - but very overcrowded.

Mt faber is one of the worst actually, TPY E1 is less crowded and more spacious.

The only nice thing about MT faber is that it has heavy dbs and a concept 2 rower with a power rack - the only few equipments i use at gyms mainly.

As far as I know that rule no longer applies, on-peak hours are open to all (citizen/PR) who pay up.
