I thought my question was clear but let me rephrase. Any suggestions on what brand bicycles are good and where I can get these specific brands. Thanks.

for a 4 years old, do you really need a branded bicycle? but if you really must, then head over to www.treknology3.com. they have branches in tanglin place, upper east coast and holland grove.

Isn't treknology quite expensive? I got a Giant brand from taiwan when we left, when my son turned 3.5 he suddenly could ride it. It has brakes and trainer wheels. In S. Africa we saw a few other interesting bikes, one without pedals or brakes, so just a frame and the child can learn balance, another type with no hand brakes, the brakes are when you reverse cycle.

Not sure which is best though...

Thanks. I didn't mean brand in the sense of a "cool brand" but as in what company bicycles to buy i.e., BMX, Safari, etc. I have no clue not having bought a bike in years. What do most people prefer in terms of safety, comfort etc. keeping in mind a 4 year-old riding a bike for the first time.

For a 4 years old, any 2 wheels bicycle with removable stabilizer side wheels will do. Look for a 12 or 14inch wheels for size.

My wife and I spent a good bit of time searching for a tri-cycle for our grand daughter and finally decided a good one doesn't exist here. We didn't restrict our search to the ex-pat areas and some of our local friends pitched in with no better result. However we did look at a lot of trainer bikes, (too large for our grand daughter but okay for a 4 year old.) We liked the ones at Carrefaur, just make sure the front and rear tires are filled with air, not solid. I'd recommend the smallest no frill bike with air filled tires and removable training wheels. Take your child with you to size the bike, his/her leg should just about straighten out when sitting on the seat and the pedal is in it's lowest position.

We also went through the bike review process for our then 3 year old. Agree with PP on the air filled tyres but also we went with pedal brakes.

We also went with the pedal brakes as hand braking was too difficult to coordinate with steering and looking up. After 6 months she's going down hills (rather too fast for my liking) and about ready to remove the training wheels.
