Car allowance

Post by mutley » Mon, 04 Oct 2004 11:49 pm

Hi again,

Thanks for the advice on electronics good. I'm finding this forum very informative prior to my departure from the UK.

Another question regarding car allowance. My company have given me S$1500/m Car allowance. I'm looking for a medium size family car (Typically Honda Accord or or equivalent), however all the internet sites have quoted in the region of S$2400/m over 2years. I could go for something smaller for S$1650, however with wife and 1 child we know how much space is required, plus we need to allow for expansion and I'm not talking about my waist line. The car will also be required for journeys into Malaysia so this needs to be included onthe lease terms.

I understand the COE has a dramtic influence on the cost of cars in singapore, but when I ask for quotes for a 4 years lease hopeing to get a reduceed rate, I'm told to get the company to up the budget. This is proving difficult, other option is to go for second hand care lease. I've probably answered my own question but if anybody has some feedback with size of cars and what they are currently paying /month this would be much appretiated..

Many thanks again.

Hi Mutley -

S$1500/per month for a car allowance is good. I would recommend buying a used car - you will get more for your money than with leasing and you will not have the restrictions about driving to Malaysia, etc. We bought a 3 year old Honda Stream with low kms and the payment is S$945/month. It's bigger than an Accord and has plenty of space for us - 2 adults & 2 kids. The finance rates for used cars are pretty good and you can finance for a longer term than just 3 or 4 years (helps get the payment lower) - if the car has longer than that left on the COE. Admittedly, buying a car here is a bit more complicated than in most countries, but once you understand things like COE, OMV, & PARF, it makes more sense and you can start looking at used cars and find one to suit your needs.

Chances are, once you get here, someone in your office will be able to help you get a handle on all the 'ins & outs' of car shopping/buying here. You'll likely use every bit of your allowance if you just lease, but if you buy you'll probably have some cash left over to help with the petrol and maintenance costs. Good luck!

Hey everybody reading this thread. I'd be wary of Dan84 here. It would seem the used car business must really be drying up as he trying to pitch to someone who posted here 5 years ago. Best of all, it wasn't even a registered member but just a guess.

Hey Dan, wazzup? Out on break from your N levels? Anyway, you are history here for soliciting business. (generally not being too bright we can excuse). [-X

Is it too much to ask that if you are going to flagrantly disregard the rules of the Board, that you check to see if the post you are responding to is current? I'm fairly certain in the 5 years since Mutley's post he's gotten everything sorted out.

Ooops, SMS got there first while I was posting...
