Pre-natal Yoga

Post by isabellybelly » Sun, 08 Mar 2009 6:47 pm

Hi everyone,

I'm three weeks new to Singapore, twelve weeks pregnant with my first child, and exploring my pre-natal yoga options. I've heard of Birth & Beyond at Tanglin Shopping Centre and Mother & Child at Tanglin Mall - does anyone have experiences with these that they can share? Are there others I should consider as well? Please point me in the right direction.

Thanks!
Isabel

I really liked the prenatal classes at Como Shambhala at the Forum Mall - on Orchard Rd. They are held a yoga studio and not a multipurpose room like Mother & Child. The instructor is very knowledagle and will give you a good work out. 1st class is free so check them out.

Prefer Mother & Child because of the flexi schedule and carpet!!

I heard that Como Shambhala is great - very experienced instructor and thorough classes. I go to Absolute Yoga - the classes are 1. hrs long and very thorough. The instructor is fab, can help you modify positions if you are tight or sore, or have any particular issues from week to week.

I tried yoga at Mother and Child, but the poses were done too quickly. There is no assistance/correction or attention to individual women's particular needs because the class size is too large. The instructor was very positive though and gave great advice about preparing for a successful birth.

I have heard that the classes at Mother & Child are good, but the size of the class can be quite large, thus less personal.

I went to the classes at Mother and Child and yes sometimes the classes did get quite busy - Friday afternoons were particularly popular. The Tutor wanted M&C to restrict the attendance to 15 only in a class but for some reason the reception lady kept letting more people in so often there would be 18 or so which did make it quite crowded.

I can't say I went often enough to get the real benefit of it but I did make some good friends there whom I'm now still in contact with after having our babies.

Beware Como Shambala

Post by Crissy » Wed, 01 Jul 2009 10:54 am

Hi ladies,

I purchased a package of 5 and during that time, I have recently developed carpal tunnel due to water retention and I am unable to do the exercises and poses.

They were so unprofessional and did not tell me about the terms and agreements prior to purchasing a package. They did not inform me ahead of time that there were no extensions on the expiry date. There was a disclaimer on the card, but I wish they would have told me ahead of time. Now I have two sessions left and are going to waste because I can't use them.

Also, there was one instructor, Ashley, who told me that I have pre-eclampsia.. She got me all worked up and scared that immediately I called my doctor and asked him about it and he said that my blood pressure and urine test turned out fine, so I have nothing to worry about. Good thing I did not go in for another visit and pay for an extra visit. The instructors are UNINFORMED and should not be telling woman that they have pre-eclampsia. She is stupid and ignorant and shouldn't scare pregnant woman like that.

Beware of purchasing a package and listening to advise from the uninformed pre-natal yoga instructors at Como Shambala!!!

Shame about your experience at Como Shambala. If ever you want to take up pre-natal yoga again you could try Mother & Child as their classes do not expire and if you don't get to finish the course, you can use them for the post-natal yoga classes. However, they too do not offer refunds.

I had carpal tunnel as well in my pregnancy, nightmare. Luckily I just managed to finish the course before it got too bad although I remember my last session wasn't very enjoyable. I was the size of a bus and my hand was agony. It took a couple of months after my baby was born for it to clear up but it will go back to normal eventually.

Good to know about that. I had made a request at Como Shambala if I could hold my two sessions and wait until post-natal until I could finish the package but they said no. That's not good business, especially for pregnant woman, because stuff happens, carpal tunnel, or maybe the baby will come earlier. Good advise thank you. =) I will definitely want to take yoga again, and suggest my friends to go elsewhere due to my bad experience.
