Jack Neo's 'Happily Ever After'

Post by Barczar » Tue, 03 Mar 2009 2:19 pm

Have any of y'all been watching Jack Neo's first 'English' (that's questionable) drama called 'Happily Ever After' on the Okto channel?

I've been watching it and I can say without a doubt that this is one of the worst pieces of cinematic garbage EVER...and it's so bad it's absolutely BRILLIANT! I haven't enjoyed watching a television programme so much in I can't remember how long!

I know Jack Neo is famous for showing things the way they really are in Singapore (i.e. he doesn't subscribe to the whole white washed cover it up image) with his movies etc like 'Follow the Law' and 'Money not Enough'. I've been in Singapore around 7 years and I am well blended in the Singaporean culture and rely on my colleagues to keep me informed of the cultural stuff I miss out on so I'm not blindly commenting here...I know my stuff better than most.

As far as I'm concerned I've always heard of these Singaporeans (as portrayed on the show' and they can always been seen in the local rags or my personal favourite STOMP, but honestly if Singaporean Men and Women truly act the way that Jack Neo claims they do in this series...there is NO HOPE!

The women are nothing more than the shallowest money grubbing kiasu better than the jones' nothing more than hookers only interested in money, their car, their vacation, the schools for the kids etc (not for the kid's interest but for the prestige!) and nothing to do with family, it's all unbelievably materialistic and shallow and completely laughable.

The men portrayed in the show are nothing more than plain and simple whimps and losers and little boys who do nothing more than complain and get pushed around and can't stand up for anything and have no control over any aspect of their lives, not their family, their jobs, their booze, nothing...pure sheep. One of the main characters is a lawyer too, these are professionaly educated and professional career (portrayed) Singaporeans.

I know many real life (i.e. not portrayed) professionally educated and professional career Singaporeans and even a few too many Singaporean lawyers and I can't imagine any of them acting like this. Having spoke to a few of the gals at the office here, they tell me that Jack Neo's portrayal is relatively accurate (not for them of course they assure me, but they know plenty of people like that).

Now I know this is a TV drama, but come on? I can see the hints of reality and am amazed that this is the way Jack Neo is portraying the real life of an educated, professional Singaporean?! It's given me a new appreciation of wanting to know more about the 'real life' Singaporeans and I can promise you that if the way the woman are portrayed is socially acceptable, there is NO WAY that I would ever even consider dating a Singaporean woman and if I were a woman, there is no way in hell that I could ever consider dating a Singapore boy (can't call them a man the way they are portrayed!) :P

Any thoughts or comments? Go and watch it and let me know what you think! Like I say, it's so unbelievably bad it's absolutely 100% pure BRILLIANT GENIUS! Can't wait for the next episode! Would love to hear especially from any Singaporeans on their take of Jack Neo's portrayals?! Maybe I've missed something completely???

Cheers
